Eric Baumer
Employed or Retired: Semi-retired
Where did you live previously: Lone Tree Colorado, Denver Colorado
What part of town do you live in: Marina
Why did you decide to move to Vallarta: I have been saving every dime since I was divorced 8 years ago. The stars aligned with the sale of my last two residences and I decided to stop working for a while. I spent a lot of time travelling Mexico and decided it was time for an adventure. Vallarta was the first place that said to me “This is it.”
What other places did you consider: Riviera Maya, Lakeside
What were the main reason(s) you moved here: Although it is touristy, you can get away from the tourist areas and it is a normal, vibrant city. Unlike the Riviera Maya, you can actually live your life like you are in a normal town that has nothing to do with tourists. There are some of the most fantastic restaurants I have been to anywhere, and they are inexpensive. I feel Vallarta is the best balance of a normal city and a beach vacation.
What are the top (3) things you have learned that you think might help someone moving to Vallarta now:
- Everyone on the internet makes it sound so easy to get rid of everything you own and move to Mexico. It was the hardest thing I have ever done – giving away everything.
- There are so many distinct areas to live in Vallarta. I chose Plaza Marina because I wanted someplace quiet, safe, convenient and affordable. I was able to buy a condo that I could not afford in Old Town. And it is much quieter. There is something for everyone here.
- There are so many things you don’t know before embarking on this adventure. Don’t let that stop you! First, you don’t need nearly as much money as you think. All my friends ask me how many millions of dollars they need to do this. I laugh and say, not even one. Don’t work your life away waiting for the perfect time. You can make this happen quicker and sooner than you think.
