How to get a Mexican drivers license in Puerto Vallarta
By Bill Ragan
Go to the new administration building on Unirse Region Costa Norte at 236 Av. De los Grandes Lagos. From the ocean heading to Costco on Fulvial turn left by Farmacy Guadalajara and it is just before the bridge. Park in the back. It opens at 8:30 am. Here is the info you will need to bring there:
- Original passport and 1 copy of photo page (they do have a copy area for a few pesos a copy)
- Immigration document 1 copy, I did both sides
- Utility bill , 1 copy for proof of address know
- Your blood type, documentation not required
As you enter from the parking in the back, the license area is just to your right. Go to the end of the counter where they will check your information, instruct you to go to the copy area to get a document that states your CURP, and a piece of paper with the amount to pay at the cashier, caja 4 or 5 (which when I went were not open and I went to 3). Initially he made a mistake and gave me one for a motorcycle; make sure it does not say moto unless that is what you want. Copy area for CURP info 10 pesos. Sit next to last person in front of caja 4,5 and do the musical chairs until you are at the cashier. Chofer cost 565 pesos Go back to the individual who sent you and show CRUP paper and receipt, he will give you a number. Sit and wait for your number to be called. When called you have your picture taken, finger prints scanned, and documentation scanned with the extra copy taken. You give your blood type and if you would like to be an organ donor. You then go sit down again until you are called to take the test.
The test is on a computer, in Spanish, and you get 10 questions. You must get 7 of 10 to pass (I think). Lots of rumors out about passing a few hundred pesos and not having to take it, or your score will always pass, etc. In this new location I would not believe them..
Here are two pdf documents with 103 questions and answers both in English (sort of) and Spanish. My 10 questions were all in this list.

The computer shows your score at the end. I passed so I do not know what would have happened if I had not. After you finish you go sit down again. In a few minutes you are called up to receive your new license. It is good for four (4) years.
I got there at 11 am and it took a little under 2 hours. Everybody was very friendly and it was a good experience. People were also there to renew there license. It appeared the process was similar, but no test.
my US license expired two years ago and when I went to the motor vehicles dept here they gave me a printed form that said I needed to take a written and driving test ( I am over 65, but I don’t know if that is an issue here or not ). Needed to show up there with a car with. Mexican plates and a Mexican driver to take me and drive me away after the test. In your post it seems that they don’t even want to see a current drivers license from anywhere….and that only a written test is required. AmI missing something…it seems to good to be true….
Please answer this, I really need to get a license…Thank you for your attention…Catalina.
