Why Vallarta: Proximity to USA, Growing expat community, Not too expensive,yet

How can ExPats in Vallarta assist you: We are interested in obtaining information on securing a rental for January,2014 . We need recommendations on where and how we can identify a place. We know if we go online .( we want a more local experience)we will get gringo prices. We want to be in a walkable area,(Old Town ? Romantic Zone ?) hopefully quiet at night, not in a big resort, and a moderate price range,maybe around $1000/month furnished. However, we are not fluent in Spanish. ( working on it).

Any guidance would be appreciated.
